What would a MAGA America look like?
There is no need to make up fantastical predictions of what a MAGA America would look like when we have a recent one to show us. In contrast, Mr. Biden's tenure has been an unmitigated disaster. Every charge Mr. Bernstein (CT Post, May 11 opinion page) levels at Mr. Trump seems to be the current modus operandi of Mr. Biden
Sure, Mr. Trump may move to cut more taxes. Reasonable people can argue about how we tax and spend ourselves into greater prosperity, and tax cuts will always benefit those who actually pay them, and sometimes benefit the rest of us as well.
We have always had a small ruling class. Half of congress is millionaires, a low bar by today's standard. The difference is that Biden has always been an influence peddling hack who made his money from political machinations, while Trump inherited the seed of his and maintained and grew it as a stereotypical New York Landlord.
The suggestion that Trump can change the constitution (a la Orban) is outright laughable. Trump appointed respected (somewhat conservative) judges who value the constitution and our countries history over any modern trend. Racist Biden made an appointment who can't tell you what a girl is because it was a black woman's turn. Which is more likely to radically reframe our constitution?
And then Mr. Bernstein rails against/celebrates (I am not sure which) the most important right in the constitution. He suggests Trump is a greater threat to this right that Biden. It was Mr. Biden who said to take on the government, you need F-15s; your AR-15 won't do it. This is the speech of the autocrat. It is Mr. Biden suggesting that he will take away our ability to challenge him/the government, promising to take away "assault" rifles, not Mr. Trump. Connecticut's Constitution is even clearer on this right, which our State's Democrats (can you say Lamont) are just as interested in undermining as Biden. Mr. Trump's judges issued the Bruen decision which protects Mr. Bernstein's right to his 1.2 arms.
Do we not remember Mr. Biden's soviet era imagery at Independence Hall and his divisive language there "We the People" but not the evil MAGA Republican? Mr. Biden continues to ignore the law and try to end-run it, whether on the border, repeatedly trying to forgive student loans, or withholding aid to Israel in a manner the Democrats called impeachable when such actions were taken by Mr. Trump.
Mr. Biden is pandering to those who wish the worst for America. He is wringing the neck of the canary rather than heeding the warning and taking corrective action. He is party to the unrest that is roiling America's campuses. He has blood on his hands.
Instead Mr. Bernstein laments that blowhard Trump will extend his "dictatorship for a day," a reference to executive orders, to a lifetime. It took our first 15 presidents to issue as many executive orders as any modern president does in one term.
It may be true that Mr. Trump's primary interest is his self, but he has proven surprisingly pragmatic and centrist in his policies. He has also proved himself to be a person with a backbone when one is needed. I don't remember ever hearing Mr. Trump warn another country "don't," but the world knew not to mess with him.
Further, we had more money in our pockets under Trump and it went a lot further. We felt safer. We were more amused.
We know what we'll get with another Trump presidency: it'll be a lot like the last one. It is no surprise that most of America prefer that to the current feckless, addled puppet (of what interest we are not sure), and his even scarier immediate alternative.
